The Journey of Dream Boy: A Tribute to Friendship and Music

In the heart of Michigan, a pivotal moment in my life began when I met George Dewey Twyman, my uncle. His influence shaped my journey into the world of music and friendships that would last a lifetime. This blog post will take you through my experiences with the Dream Boys and the incredible journey that followed.

Meeting the Dream Boys

When I first arrived in Michigan, I was introduced to a group of talented individuals who would become my second family. Among them were:

  • Jeff Stanton
  • Paul Stewart
  • Jimmy Box Hunt
  • Jeff Bass
  • Dee Brown

These guys became my closest friends, and I want to take a moment to express my love and gratitude for them. Together, we navigated the ups and downs of life and music for over 40 years.

The California Connection

After my time in Michigan, I moved to California, where my life took another exciting turn. I met Spider Turner through my cousin, Lord G. Lord G, a Detroit rapper, became a significant part of my life, and together we ventured into the music scene. It was during this time that I also met:

  • Tony Green – A talented bassist from Detroit who introduced me to the legendary Dr. Dre.
  • Billy Hearns – Spider’s partner who became one of my best friends.

These connections opened doors to incredible opportunities, including working on the Above the Rhythms soundtrack with Tupac.

A Chance Encounter with Norman Whitfield

One of the most memorable moments in my journey was meeting the iconic Norman Whitfield at Spider’s house. I was initially starstruck, but Norman quickly put me at ease. His wisdom and guidance would later play a crucial role in my career.

The Importance of Legacy

Norman Whitfield recognized my potential and took me under his wing. He emphasized the importance of understanding the music business, especially when I faced legal challenges. He said:

“You need to come work for me.”

This pivotal moment led me to work with Norman for nearly 20 years, where I learned invaluable lessons about music production and the industry.

The Legacy of Norman Whitfield

Before Norman passed away, he entrusted me with a significant responsibility: to carry on his legacy. We were in the process of writing his book, and he believed I could bring together the pieces of his story. This inspired me to write “Dream Boy, Norman, and Me,” a tribute to our shared experiences.

Navigating Challenges and Rumors

As I navigated my career, rumors began to swirl about me starting my own label. While I appreciated the support from friends like Joe, I couldn’t ignore the challenges that came with such a decision. The music industry can be cutthroat, and I always had to be cautious about who I trusted.

The Struggles of Creativity

Creativity often comes with its struggles, especially when it involves collaboration. A memorable conversation highlighted the tension between artistic ownership and commercial opportunities. When discussing a song I wrote, I faced the dilemma of whether to give it to a major label, Rolls Royce, or keep it for myself. This moment encapsulated the struggles artists face in balancing passion with the realities of the music business.

Conclusion: A Journey Worth Sharing

The journey of Dream Boy has been filled with friendships, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. From my roots in Michigan to the bright lights of California, every moment has shaped who I am today. As I continue to share my story, I hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams and cherish the connections they make along the way.
